Fellow and Praelector in History at The Queen’s College, and Lecturer (CUF) in the University of Oxford, since 1981. At Queen’s I am Fellow Librarian, Fellow Archivist, and Curator of Pictures.
I teach a range of papers, mainly in British medieval history, for Queen’s and other Colleges. I also supervise MSt and DPhil students in areas related to my own research; currently I have six doctoral students working on their theses.
I am one of the General Editors of Oxford Medieval Texts and of Oxford Studies in Medieval History and Archaeology, and edited the journal Oxoniensia for several years. I am a member of the Committee on Anglo-Saxon Charters, the English Heritage Research Panel, and the Oxford Diocesan Advisory Committee for the Care of Churches, and a former member of the Advisory Board for Redundant Churches.
I have appeared several times on Channel 4’s ‘Time Team’ programme, including the recent documentary (‘The King of Bling’) on the rich seventh-century burial found at Southend-on-Sea.
My research interests centre on the history, archaeology and landscape of medieval England, notably churches, settlements and material culture. After the recent completion of my biggest book so far, The Church in Anglo-Saxon Society, I am pursuing further themes in the areas of Anglo-Saxon belief, ritual and economic development.
