Epistemology and metaphysics. Philosophy of mind and action. Aesthetics and philosophy of art. Wittgenstein.
Between 1984 and 1988 I held a North Senior Scholarship at St. John's College, Oxford, a Post-doctoral Research Fellowship at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem and a Junior Research Fellowship at Trinity College, Oxford. Since 1988 I have been a Fellow of The Queen's College, Oxford and a member of the Philosophy Faculty. In 2001-2002 I was a Getty Scholar at the Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles. In 2002-2003 I was a Fellow of the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. I was Chairman of the Philosophy Faculty in Oxford and a member of the Humanities Divisional Board in 2003-2005. I am currently editor of The British Journal of Aesthetics and Senior Tutor at Queen's. In 2010-2012, I shall hold a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship, which was awarded to enable me to complete a book about action and cognition, entitled After the Fall.
