Choral Scholarships at Queen’s are open to all voices (including both countertenors and contraltos). Scholars receive an award of £600 a year, including funding for singing lessons. In addition, dinner is provided free of charge after every sung service. Choral Scholars are elected in competition in two stages: the choral trial in September and the academic examining and interviewing in November and December. If there are vacancies the College may also hold a second competition in October for newly arrived undergraduates. Up to eight awards are available each year. The duties of the Choral Scholars are to sing in the Chapel Choir at the three weekly choral services and termly concert. Prospective applicants are welcome to contact Dr Rees at any time of year. An open day for Choral and Organ awards is held by the Music Faculty in late April each year.
A recent Choral Scholar writes
I have been accepted at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where I will be pursuing an MA in vocal performance. They have been generous enough to offer me a full scholarship. Much of the credit for this goes to Dr Owen Rees and the excellent training I received under his direction in the College Choir; without three years of singing at Queen’s, I very much doubt I could have achieved this!

There are always two Organ Scholars at Queen’s. The value of an Organ Scholarship is £200 per annum; in addition generous financial support for organ lessons is provided. Organ Scholars are guaranteed rooms on the main college site, with piano, for the duration of their course. The Organ Scholars play the organ at College services and assist with the training and directing of the choir. The organ award is next offered for an undergraduate coming into residence in 2010.
