Ash, John.

John spent three years in Australia having followed his D. Phil. supervisor (John Crossley) to Monash University. Back in England, he has had a career in computing, much of it with ICI Pharmaceuticals/AstraZeneca from whom he took early retirement at the end of 2001. He now lives on Wirral with his botanist wife Hilary (nee Gray, the first Organ Scholar at LMH(1974)), and they have two sons, Richard (reading Electronic Engineering at York University) and Martin (Upper Sixth). Current interests include music (as ever), the foundations of quantum mechanics, and chairing the local Churches Together.

Keith read Engineering Science at Queen's and greatly enjoyed rowing and OICCU. Nowadays he's a senior lecturer in the School of Electronic Engineering, Information Technology and Mathematics at the University of Surrey.

Peter read Chemistry at Queen's and then completed MBA and PhD degrees at the Graduate School of Business, The University of Chicago. Brand, Christopher Richard.

After graduation, Chris worked as a prison psychologist, a psychological researcher
(Nuffield College, Oxford) and psychology lecturer (Edinburgh University). In 1996,
his book about IQ, THE g FACTOR, led to media-orchestrated outrage at his
political incorrectness. He now works as a research consultant to the Woodhill
Foundation (USA) and lives in Edinburgh with his Taiwanese wife, Shiou-yun. He
has a son and two daughters by former marriages.

Ronald read Modern Languages (Fr./Ger.) at Queens and left the UK to work in Germany after graduating. Held various positions as Marketing Manager and Managing Director, then opted for independence. He is currently a translator and teacher of WingTsun kung fu living near Bristol.

Carson, John.

John took a university teaching position in Ontario in 1970; became a civil servant in 1978 and was Director of International Relations until 1990. Since 1991 he has taught government and international politics at the University of Toronto. He is married, has a son and daughter and two grandchildren. He will retire in December 2003 and plans extensive travel.

Tim is now Professor Emeritus at City University London, and is an honorary Life Fellow of Gresham College in the City of London. He is active with the Chartered Institute of Linguists as Vice-President and also chairs the Educational Trust Board. He is a court assistant at the Stationers' and Newspaper Makers' Company.

Costen, Michael.

Michael retired from the University of Bristol in 2004 as Dean of Continuing Education. He is now Senior Research Fellow in the Department
of Archaeology and Anthropology. Michael published his fifth book
'Anglo-Saxon Somerset' in 2011 and is now working with colleagues on a book on the castles of Stephen and Matilda. In the summertime he would rather be sailing.

Christopher read Modern Languages (French and Spanish) at Queens before gaining a MBA at the City University, London in 1984. He is now working as a Managment and company improvement consultant, with his own business 'Day2'.

Donnelly, (Joseph) Brian.

Brian read PPE at Queen's and also edited Cherwell. After getting a Master's Degree from the University of Wisconsin he started an M.Phil at LSE butleft in 1970 to join, first, GCHQ and then, in 1973, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.After a variety of home and overseas diplomatic postings he became Ambassador to Yugoslavia and then Zimbabwe. He will be retiring from the FCO in 2004.

Tony graduated in zoology at Queen's and then went to do a PhD in fish immunology in Aberdeen's Marine Laboratory, where he happily remains as a researcher.He has had 5 wonderful children and enjoys the Highlands.

Fielding, Howard.

While at Queen's, Howard read Classics, captained the hockey team and was a member of the Occasionals. He then went into teaching and Local Government, ending as Director of Education in Harrow. Now running an education consultancy based in London which negotiates what contributions housing developments should make to local education facilities. Married with two children, he plays poor golf, and divides his leisure time between properties and wine cellars in France and Spain.

Harvey read Modern Languages (French and Italian) and taught for a number of years. Worked for Quakers as publication secretary and for 18 years until December 2001 was outreach secretary.He has written on spirituality and Quakerism; is now (2002)Rowntree Quaker Fellow on the theme of "Communicating the spiritual quest in a puzzled world".

Gregory, John Robin.

John read Modern History at Queen's, then qualified as a solicitor. Worked in local government all his career, retiring as Corporate Director, Staffordshire County Council in 2004. Worked part time as Solicitor to Staffordshire Fire Authority until 2006 including a spell as Secretary to the Minister's Fire Advisory Forum. Married Janet Hardy (they met at Oxford) who died in 2004. Their son Andrew works in computing after a first in Maths at Trinity, Cambridge, and a PhD. Daughter Sarah works as a commercial property solicitor. John now lives in Worcestershire with his new partner, Elisabeth.

Hague, Rod.

Rod read PPE at Queens, and has taught at the University of Newcastle since 1969, where he is Senior Lecturer in Politics. Best known as co-author of a standard text on comparative government, Rod is also Executive Director of the Applied Policy Sciences Unit, which carries out research and consultancy for clients in public and private sectors. Currently on secondment to Westlakes Research Institute, Rod is contributing to the development of a postgraduate college in Cumbria with an innovative multi-disciplinary focus on environmental issues.

Hartnoll, Richard.

After graduating in 1969 Richard studied at the Institute of Criminology in Cambridge. Subsequently he pursued a career in social and epidemiological research on drug addiction, working in London (1972- 1990) Barcelona (1990-1995) and finally Lisbon (1995-2002). In 2002, he resigned from his job at the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction and changed career. He now works as a professional photographer in Lisbon, Portugal, where he lives with his partner Dagmar and daughter Noa. His two older children, Sean and Kate, are currently working/studying in the USA and Cuba.

Hickson, Peter.

Peter read Classics at Queens before joining K. Shoes where he rose to be Managing Director of the Retail Company and main board director. He was then Head hunted to Lonrho as a Divisional Managing Director before moving into the 'not for Profit' world with The Prince's Trust, latterly as Divisional Director for the North of England. His final position before retirement in 2005 was as CEO of Groundwork Trust in West Cumbria. Peter has been married to Sheila for 33 years. They continue to live in Allithwaite in the Lake District where Sheila is the local GP. He has two children, Caroline having graduated from Cambridge reading French and Russian is now Manager International Executive Services Tax with KPMG in Sydney Australia, and Adrian gained a 1st in Mechanical Engineering at Coventry and now works for Cummins in Darlington.

After a long career in Marketing in the food industry, including 4 years in Japan, I have now retired and have taken on a number of trustee roles. The biggest of these is as a Court Governor for the Whitgift Foundation in Surrey, which is responsible for 3 independent schools-Whitgift, Trinity and Old Palace of John Whitgift.

Ignacio read Mathematics at Queen's and has fond memories of his rowing for the College. He is now retired after a lifetime dedicated to academics, during which he held the position of Vice Chancellor for a number of years as well as other posts of responsibility in the academic environment of his country.

Jenner, Bryan.

Bryan read German and French at Queen's and sang in Schola Cantorum and the Opera Club. He taught modern languages for a few years, but then moved into linguistics and has worked at universities in Britain, Holland, Kenya, the Czech Republic and Japan, before settling in Vienna. He now divides his time between teaching and translating, commuting regularly between Austria and West Bohemia

Kerr, Tony.

Tony taught in England, Africa, Spain and Sweden, then became an LEA educational psychologist and Assistant Director of Education in a London borough.
Co-ordinated a scheme promoting social enterprise in the rural South West, and now works freelance, mainly with voluntary and community groups. Married with two grown-up daughters.

Khan, Khalid Aziz.

Khalid studied PPE at Queen's. During the course he was selected for the Civil Service of Pakistan. While at Queen's Khalid represented the college in cricket, hockey and squash. He also played cricket for the Authentics. In 1981, Khalid was at Wolfson College, Cambridge where he obtained an M.Phil in Development Studies. Khalid has served for more than 30 years in the Civil Service. He has remained the Chief Secretary of the North West Frontier Province. He was also appointed the first civil servant head of Accountability Bureau of the govt of Pakistan, when it was created in 1999. Khalid now lives with his wife Tony and their children in Peshawar. Khalid's elder son Shumayl Aziz is a practising lawyer, who qualified for the Bar after obtaining a degree from the UK. Khalid is nowadays looking after the family furniture business, which he inherited from his father.

1963-94: Indian Foreign Service. Served as Ambassador in Cuba, Indonesia and Bhutan but a lot of career dealt with China. Spent a year at Center for International Affairs, Harvard University, as a Fellow, 1988-89. Co-author of two books: "India and China: The Way Ahead" & "The Ramayana in Indonesia". Now: i. Executive Chairman, The Council of Social Development, New Delhi; ii. Principal Consultant, Tech Mahindra Foundation (a development support organization); iii. Previous posts include Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at the University of Stirling (1972-1995) and Ferens Professor of Philosophy at the University of Hull (1995-2000). Visiting positions at Cornell University, Tsukuba University (Japan), the Australian National University,and the University of Lisbon. Most recent book is Work and Object: Explorations in the Metaphysics of Art (Oxford UP, 2010).

Lindley, Tony.

Tony Read Modern Languages (German & French) at Queens. He now lives in Oxford and is a faculty member of, and acts as Course Director for, the Chartered Institute of Marketing in Cookham, Berkshire. He is also a Visiting Fellow in Marketing at Bradford University School of Management. He co-presented a paper on "A brand identity framework for the arts sector" to the European Academy of Marketing in Rotterdam in 2000, and is currently writing a book on the subject.

After completing research at the Open University with the Rutherford and Appleton Laboratory, Richard worked on Stirling Engine development. In the 1980's, he moved to Scotland, and later to Perth, Western Australia. He returned to the UK in 1997, and currently works as Director of Strategic Futures for Intec Telecom Systems PLC. He continues to devote time to his lifelong interest in painting and photography.

Moss, John Robin.

Robin read Greats at Queens and enjoyed his four years at Oxford enormously. Captain of Boats 1960-61 he still rows at stroke for the Thames Rowing Club Casuals and Veterans crew as often as possible. Robin now works for the ITC in London, as Head of Education and finds regulation of British television at the end of the 20th century is much enlivened by his PhD (1970) study of the fall of the West Roman Empire.

Porter, Vincent.

After taking a degree in Natural Sciences, Vincent worked for five years making sponsored documentary films with Film Centre (International). From 1967 he taught film and mass communications at the Polytechnic, Regent Street (which was succesively renamed the Polytechnic of Central London, and the University of Westminster). He was made Professor of Mass Communications in 1991, and he retired as an Emeritus Professor in 2004. Between 2005 and 2008, he was the President of EURALVA, the European Alliance of Listeners' and Viewers' Associations. He now lives in Chichester, West Sussex.

Quarrell, Peter John.

Peter read PPE at Queen's, and spent 9 years in the steel industry doing Operational Research and qualifying as a Chartered Statistician. Emigrating to the Cotswolds in 1973 he has worked ever since as a management consultant, first with a large consultancy and since 1998 as an independent. Having produced two daughters (one a D Phil organic chemist who is Daily Telegraph Rowing correspondent, and one the Head of History at Bryanston School) he was widowed early in 2003. He has now returned to his Sheffield roots, married an old friend, and is living in a converted cowshed half a mile from his birthplace.

Erik read for a D.Phil. in International Relations at Queen's. Since then he has served four years as an officer in the U.S. Air Force and Assistant Professor of Political Science at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado, and then fifteen years as a U.S. diplomat with postings in Berlin, Vienna, Moscow, and Budapest. He now works on international exchanges in Washington.

Teague, Anthony G..

Anthony has been a member of the ecumenical Community of Taize (France) since 1969 and is usually known as Brother Anthony. In 1980 he went to Korea and for over 20 years he was Professor in the English Department, Sogang University, Seoul, teaching medieval and renaissance literature. He has now retired, has been appointed Professor Emeritus, and continues to teach there. He has published more than 20 volumes of English translations of contemporary Korean poetry and fiction as well as an introduction to the Korean Way of Tea. He has Korean nationality, his Korean name is An Sonjae.

With a Degree in German and French, and a PGCE, Chris entered teaching and taught in Germany, Malaysia, Austria, and England. He went to Leicester for his M.Ed. in 1979-80. In 1998 he went into the world of property management, and now lives in Bournemouth with wife Marianne (married 1973 in Queen's), but not with his three children who are all energetically pursuing their own careers elsewhere in the world.

After graduation and a PGCE at the Oxford Department of Education, Mike taught modern languages on Merseyside and in Hertfordshire for six years. He then returned to his native Kent in 1978 and has had a number of management posts with Kent County Council: he is currently Local Education Officer for the Cranbrook cluster of schools. He has been married to Janet for 20 years and they live in Maidstone with their children, David and Jessica.

Since 1970 has been engaged in the book trade, initially in academic and professional publishing, thence to library supply, and latterly as a second-hand bookseller (can be taken either way),specialist medical bookseller at conferences, book searcher and book fair organiser.
Took most of his working life to realise that he was unemployable, so is now self-employed and works from home, enjoying commuting downstairs, reporting to none, and with none reporting to him. Semi-retired, though some say semi-retarded.
Used to call himself a bachelor gay. Is still a bachelor. Archetypal SINK (Single Income No Kids).

Graham studied Modern Languages (French, Spanish) and moved to Spain in 1974. He embarked on a career in sports writing for El Pais, Daily Telegraph, World Soccer etc and had three years working at FC Barcelona when Terry Venables was manager in the 1980s. He then returned to press and TV journalism before starting work with UEFA in 1994.

John graduated in Physics and spent four years with Plessey Telecommunications before leaving to join the family business of Ratcliffe's Office Stationers in Rotherham. There he has taken an active part in local affairs, becoming President of Rotherham Rotary Club and of the Chamber of Trade. The business was taken over in 2006 by the BOS Office Supplies Group, for whom John now works as a Consultant. His interests include sailing, walking and skiing.

John was the Caving Leader of the Oxford University Expedition to Northern Spain 1961. After graduating, he worked in the computer industry for 7 years before lecturing in Higher Education, retiring as Reader in Computing at Staffordshire University in 1997. He is still Honorary Research Fellow at Staffordshire University, and Hon. Secretary of the British Cave Research Association. Besides this he enjoys archaeology, orienteering and Scottish Dancing, as well as running several web sites which may be accessed from his personal home page.

Wilde, Julian.

Julian Wilde, was an Open Scholar of The Queen's College, Oxford, where he took an Honours Degree in Theology. He has taught in state and independent schools in Manchester and Oxfordshire, and from 1984 to 1993 was Headmaster of The City School, Lincoln. He has travelled on study visits to the United States, the West Indies and New Zealand in recent years.
