College’s unique object sings out in ghostly exploration

6 October 2017

The Queen’s College Library holds the only surviving copy of the first printed hymnbook, Miles Coverdale’s Goostly psalmes and spirituall songes drawen out of the holy Scripture, for the comforte and consolacyon of soch as loue to reioyse in God and his Worde.

On 25 October Henrike Lähnemann, Chair of Medieval German Literature and Linguistics and Fellow of St Edmund Hall, provided a hands-on (and voice-on) exploration of the genre of the Protestant hymnbook to mark the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.  Choral Evensong, with hymns from Coverdale’s book, followed his lecture.

This event at Queen’s College is part of the programme for the ‘Workshop for Manuscript and Text Cultures’ (WMTC). Full event details can be found here
