Dr Hamish Yeung

Extraordinary Junior Research Fellow in Chemistry

Introduction

I grew up and was educated in Bedford and studied Natural Sciences at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, specialising in Chemistry in later years. I stayed in Cambridge to complete a PhD in Materials Science with Prof Tony Cheetham in 2012 and a brief postdoc in the same group. From 2014 to 2016 I worked as an independent researcher at the National Institute for Materials Science, Japan before returning to the UK to take up a Glasstone Fellowship in Inorganic Chemistry and Extraordinary JRF at Queen’s in October 2016.

Research

My research focuses on the interdependence between the synthesis, structure and properties of functional materials. I’m particularly interested in coordination polymers - hybrid materials formed from metal-based nodes connected by organic linkers - which lend themselves well to structures with a high degree of compositional and mechanical flexibility. My work is driven by the desire to uncover the fundamental principles governing formation and behaviour of certain structures and how this knowledge can be used to create materials with improved performance in applications such as chemical sensors, artificial muscles or energy storage.
