A Royal Institution lecture by Fellow in Physics Dr Kirsty Duffy on the search for the universe’s most elusive particles is now available to watch online.
In Neutrinos: The ghost particle that could explain why you exist, Dr Duffy explores one of the most intriguing particles in the universe. Around 100 billion neutrinos pass through your thumbnail every second, yet these extraordinarily elusive particles interact so rarely with matter that you will never notice them.
Her lecture explains how decades of research into neutrinos revealed that our best theory of particle physics is incomplete, and how scientists are now using next-generation experiments to tackle one of the biggest unanswered questions in science: why does the universe exist?
Dr Duffy also introduces the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), an international collaboration constructing a detector a mile underground in South Dakota. The experiment will investigate the behaviour of neutrinos in unprecedented detail and could provide vital clues about why the universe is made of matter rather than antimatter.
