Introduction

I am a historian of race, faith and culture in Modern Britain. I am also a Fellow of the Institute of Historical Research and the Royal Historical Society, and an Associate Member of the Faculty of History at the University of Oxford. From 2020-2025, I worked as a Lecturer in Black British History and Modern British History at Goldsmiths, University of London, where I was part of the team of two that created, launched and delivered the UK’s first MA in Black British History. I also work as Advocacy and Engagement Officer at the Royal Historical Society, where I advocate for and promote the advancement of historical research and the humanities. I am also Chair of the Equity Working Group at the Institute of Historical Research.

Research

My academic research interests include: histories of religion, race and anti-racism in the twentieth century; questions of identity, belonging and multiculturalism; media and propaganda; and the scope and limitations of England’s national school curriculum. I was the Principal Investigator of an AHRC-funded project dedicated to understanding innovative methods for diversifying, decolonising and de-centring British history education across the four nations of the UK (2021-24). I am currently working on completing an academic monograph entitled Race, Religion and Anti-Racism: A History of Britain, 1960-1995.
