Fergus Garwood joined The Queen’s College as Domestic Bursar in 2025 following a distinguished 34-year career in the Royal Air Force (RAF). He served operationally in Afghanistan, the Baltics, Bosnia, Croatia, Iraq, Kuwait, and across the wider Middle East, alongside holding senior appointments within the Ministry of Defence and HM Treasury.
As Station Commander and Head of Establishment at RAF Halton, he held overall responsibility for the Station, its 3,000 personnel, and operational performance, leading multiple cross-functional teams in the management of the 760-acre estate and the delivery of the RAF’s basic training programme. Under his leadership, practices developed at Halton were recognised as exemplars and subsequently adopted more widely across the RAF. As Halton served as the RAF’s centre for State and Service ceremonial, Fergus also led the RAF’s contribution to the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II and the Coronation of HM The King. He concluded his military career on secondment to the Cabinet Office, supporting the Prime Minister and the National Security Council.
Fergus helps keep Queen’s running smoothly with responsibility for the continued development and delivery of the College’s domestic operations. He supports the Governing Body in ensuring that the College’s facilities, services, and operational functions are managed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with the College’s long-term objectives. Above all, he brings a positive and energetic approach, together with a strong sense of commitment, helping to foster close and effective relationships between academics, students, and staff.
Educated at King’s College London, Fergus lives in the Cotswolds with his wife, Kate.
