Russian poet Maria Stepanova joins Sasha Dugdale, editor of /Modern Poetry in Translation/, for a poetry reading and discussion of her own work and her recent response to the conflict in the Donbass Region The War of the Beasts and the Animals. Maria Stepanova is a poet, essayist, journalist and the author of ten poetry collections and two books of essays. She has been awarded several Russian and international literary awards (including the prestigious Andrey Bely Prize and Joseph Brodsky Fellowship). Her current project In Memory of Memory is a book-length study in the field of cultural history.

She is the founder and editor-in-chief of the online independent crowd-sourced journal Colta.ru. Colta.ru covers the cultural, social and political reality of contemporary Russia, with an audience of nearly a million visitors a month.

Maria has been described as 'one of the most visible figures in post-Soviet culture ­ not only as a poet, but as a journalist, a publisher, and a powerful voice for press freedom'.

This is an English-language event with some Russian readings.

The event will be held in the Shulman Auditorium at The Queen's College, Oxford. All are welcome.
