On Sunday 23 April 2023, the College displayed our First Folio as part of the Folio400 celebrations marking the 400th anniversary of the first printed edition of Shakespeare’s collected plays. We had over 250 visitors come to take a look at this great wonder of the literary world.

In the run up to the event, the Librarian Matt Shaw commissioned a bespoke case to protect the Folio that was crafted by our Joiner Paul Farnes. We asked Paul to tell us a bit about the project.

What kind of wood is the display case made from?

The display case is made of oak, with a safety glass top and LED light.

How long did it take to make?

I’m unsure how long it took to make as I designed and made it in between other work.

What did you enjoy about this project?

The challenge!

How long have you been at Queen’s?

I have been at Queen’s for 22 years.

What is your favourite part of the College?

My favourite part of the College is the chapel because that’s where I have made the most furniture, pews, prayer board, lecterns etc..
