On 30 May 2025, current graduate student Taha Almasri (DPhil in Law) delivered an address to the International Law Commission at the special plenary ceremony of the Commission’s 76th session held at the United Nations Office in Geneva. Taha addressed the Commission in his capacity as a participant from the State of Libya at the 59th session of the International Law Seminar and as representative of the participants from the Africa region.
Taha said:
It was a distinct honour to address the International Law Commission and a real pleasure to participate in the International Law Seminar. We were immersed in the Commission’s current programme of work and had the privilege to engage with the special rapporteurs on the key issues arising in the topics under consideration by the Commission. I thank all the members of the Commission and the Secretariat for their welcoming spirit and generosity.
The United Nations Office at Geneva has organized the International Law Seminar annually since 1965, held over a three-week period in conjunction with the annual session of the International Law Commission. The purpose of the Seminar is to enhance participants’ understanding of the work of the Commission, as well as the codification and progressive development of international law. Additionally, the Seminar provides a unique opportunity for legal professionals from diverse legal traditions and cultural backgrounds to engage in meaningful dialogue on matters under consideration by the Commission.
