Queen’s College runners closed Hilary Term in style at this year’s Teddy Hall Relays, one of the highlights of Oxford’s running calendar. With a standout victory from the women’s team and a strong sense of camaraderie underpinning their success, the race offered a fitting snapshot of the energy and community at the heart of the Queen’s College Run Club. We spoke to Run Club Secretary Sarah McGrath to find out more.

What are the Teddy Hall Relays, and how do they work?

The Teddy Hall Relays is an event hosted by Oxford University Cross Country club every year in eighth week of Hilary Term. It consists of four 7km laps starting at the Roger Bannister track followed by Iffley Lock, and Christchurch Meadows. There are a variety of categories to compete in; college, mixed, female, male etc. so there are many podium spots up for grabs.

How big is the event within the Oxford running calendar?

The Teddy Hall Relays are a real highlight of the University of Oxford running calendar. Coming at the end of a season filled with intense competition, they offer a refreshing change of pace. The pressure eases, the atmosphere lifts, and the focus shifts from performance to participation. With an inclusive spirit, they bring together a wide range of runners, making the event feel welcoming and celebratory. It’s not just a race, but a chance to round off the season on a high, enjoying the sport, the camaraderie, and the community that’s built over the year.

What made the Queen’s women’s team performance stand out this year?

The Queen’s women’s team of Juliette McGrath, Ellie Whelan, Sara Lee, and Georgia Campbell stormed to victory in the women’s college race. Their dedication to training with the Queen’s College Run Club was clear to see, and their constant encouragement of one another carried them to the win.

Can you tell us a little about the Queen’s College Run Club: how often you train and how many students are involved?

Queen’s College Run Club is a friendly, inclusive community that meets four times a week, with runs in both the morning and late afternoon. With around eight runners per session, it’s the perfect setting to enjoy a relaxed 5km while chatting, connecting, and building friendships with fellow runners across Queen’s College. Our runs are all about community as much as fitness; whether you’re a seasoned runner or just getting started, everyone is welcome. And for those early risers, we make the 7am start worthwhile by finishing our morning runs with a well-earned pastry trip, the ultimate reward!
