Mae cystadleuaeth gyfieithu newydd yn cael ei lansio yn yr Hydref 2021 i fyfyrwyr rhwng 11 ac 18 oed yng Nghymru. Mae Gwobr Anthea Bell i Gyfieithwyr Ifanc yn fenter gan y Translation Exchange yng Ngholeg y Frenhines, Prifysgol Rhydychen. Cynhelir y gystadleuaeth o’r Ffrangeg i’r Gymraeg am y tro cyntaf yn 2021-2022.
Bywyd a gwaith y cyfieithydd gwych, Anthea Bell, yw’r ysbrydoliaeth tu cefn i’r gystadleuaeth. Nod y gystadleuaeth yw hybu dysgu ieithoedd ar hyd a lled y DU a sbarduno creadigrwydd yn yr ystafell ddosbarth. Trwy roi’r adnoddau i athrawon sydd eu hangen arnynt i ddod â chyfieithu yn fyw, y gobaith yw gallu ysbrydoli rhagor o ddisgyblion i astudio ieithoedd tramor modern trwy gydol eu hamser yn yr ysgol a thu hwnt.
Tasgau’r gystadleuaeth ac adnoddau addysgu
Bydd llinyn Cymraeg y gystadleuaeth yn rhedeg o’r Ffrangeg yn y flwyddyn gyntaf hon, a’r bwriad yw ymestyn i ieithoedd eraill wedi hynny. Bydd llinyn Saesneg y gystadleuaeth yn rhedeg o’r Ffrangeg, Almaeneg, Mandarin a Sbaeneg. Bydd y gystadleuaeth ar draws pedair lefel ym mhob iaith; mae’r lefelau hyn ar gyfer pob grŵp blwyddyn o Gyfnod Allweddol 3 i Gyfnod Allweddol 5. Bydd y gystadleuaeth ar agor am rai wythnosau yn y Gwanwyn, 2022.
Bydd pawb sy’n cofrestru eu diddordeb yn cael pecynnau addysgu gyda fideos, cyflwyniadau a thaflenni gwaith. Ar gyfer pob lefel ym mhob iaith, mae tair set o adnoddau addysgu ar gyfieithu barddoniaeth, ffuglen a darnau ffeithiol. Mae adnoddau addysgu sydd wedi’u bwriadu ar gyfer disgyblion sy’n astudio Ffrangeg ar ddechrau ac ar ddiwedd Cyfnod Allweddol 3 ar gael yn y Gymraeg a’r Saesneg. Dosberthir yr adnoddau addysgu yn yr Hydref 2021 ac yn fuan yn 2022.

Gall athrawon hefyd fynegi diddordeb mewn cyfleoedd eraill gan y Translation Exchange gan ddefnyddio’r ffurflen hon.

A new translation competition is launching in Autumn 2021 for students aged 11-18 in Wales. The Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators is an initiative from the Translation Exchange at The Queen’s College, University of Oxford. The competition will run from French into Welsh for the first time in 2021-2022.
The competition is inspired by the life and work of the great translator Anthea Bell. It promotes language learning across the UK and inspires creativity in the classroom. By providing teachers with the tools they need to bring translation to life, it aims to motivate more pupils to study modern foreign languages throughout their time at school and beyond.
Competition tasks and teaching resources
The Welsh strand of the competition will run from French in this first year, with a view to expanding to other languages in subsequent years. The English strand of the competition runs in French, German, Mandarin and Spanish. The competition runs across four levels for each language; these levels cover all year groups from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 5. The competition will be open for several weeks in spring 2022.
All those who register their interest will receive teaching packs which include videos, presentations and worksheets. For every level in every language, there are three sets of teaching resources on translating poetry, fiction and non-fiction. Teaching resources aimed at pupils studying French at the beginning and end of Key Stage 3 are available in Welsh and English. The teaching resources will be distributed in autumn 2021 and early 2022.
Judging the competition in Wales
In Wales, translations from French into Welsh and English will be judged by Professor Angharad Price. Born in Bethel near Caernarfon, she studied Modern Languages at Jesus College, Oxford where she also completed a DPhil in Celtic Studies. She is currently Professor in Welsh and Creative Writing at Bangor University. The author of several novels and academic volumes, her novel O, Tyn y Gorchudd (The Life of Rebecca Jones), was Wales Book of the Year in 2003 and has been translated into several languages. She is also an experienced literary translator from German, French, Italian and Spanish and co-edited Translation Studies: Special Issue Wales with H. Miguelez-Carballeira and J. Kaufmann. In 2014 she received the Glyndwr Award for an outstanding contribution to the arts in Wales.
