Dom Hewett, Library Assistant, in semi-finals of Mastermind

4 April 2020

Tune in to BBC Two at 8pm on Monday 6 April to see how Dom fares in the semi-final contest, with his specialist subject of Flight of the Conchords! The episode will also be available to watch after broadcast on the BBC iPlayer.

The series was filmed last autumn and Dom tells us more below.

‘The whole experience was very fun. The show was filmed in Belfast, and it was great to go there and visit the city as I had never been before. For my first round I chose the poet W.H. Auden (who I wrote my undergraduate dissertation on a few years ago). For the semi-final I went for the comedy duo Flight of the Conchords as you have to pick something new. It was a very different thing to revise, watching/ listening to their TV show, radio show and albums, whereas Auden mainly involved reading biographies/ the poems.

‘There were definitely a few questions that I kicked myself for getting wrong, mainly in the general knowledge. In the semi-final, I blanked on the word 'glossary' under the pressure, and I'm pretty sure I said something silly about Spiderman! That said, I was pleased with other things – got a couple of science questions right in the first round, which is definitely not my forte – and coped well generally with what was quite a high-pressure situation.

‘I've done a bit of quizzing in the past – I was on the Bristol University Challenge team a couple of years ago, and we got to the quarter-finals, so I ended up being on five episodes. I love a pub quiz and playing Articulate with friends and family, and occasionally play in quizzing tournaments which are very intense but can be fun.

‘Mastermind is pretty iconic as a quiz show, and I liked the idea of really swotting up on a specialist subject or two. I'd love to go on again in a few years with some new specialist subjects, though in the mean time it would be fun to go on a show where I could win a bit of money – then all that time on Wikipedia would really pay off.

‘A large part of it is social, though, and one highlight was sharing the experience with friends, family and colleagues, and in meeting my fellow contestants and the production team.’
